Defendant Found Guilty of First-Degree Murder in Bizarre Romance-Related Shooting

A 40-year-old Washington D.C. man has been found guilty of first-degree murder and related charges in a shocking case of love turned deadly.

Vernon Parrish was convicted of first-degree murder while armed, possession of a firearm during a crime of violence, and unlawful possession of a firearm, following a trial in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia.

The gruesome crime took place on September 26, 2021, outside a home in the 5200 block of E Street Southeast, Washington D.C. Parrish, who was engaged in a romantic relationship with the same woman as the victim, Ronald Bailey, drove to Bailey’s home armed with a firearm.

According to the evidence, Parrish sped into the block, got out of the car, and screamed for Bailey before firing multiple shots into the house, killing him. Parrish then fled the scene.

The jury delivered the guilty verdict on July 9, 2024, and Parrish has been in custody since his arrest on October 6, 2021.

In a statement, U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves and Chief Pamela A. Smith of the Metropolitan Police Department commended the work of those who investigated the case, including the FBI Washington Field Office Cellular Analysis Survey Team.

Assistant U.S. Attorneys Gregory Kimak and Alec Levy were also praised for their efforts in investigating, indicting, and prosecuting the case.

Parrish is scheduled to be sentenced on October 11, 2024. The maximum sentence for first-degree murder while armed is life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.

The case is a grim reminder of the devastating consequences of love turned deadly and the need for law enforcement to take a hard stance against such violence.
