Man Jailed for Gun Crime in Rapid City
A Rapid City man has been sentenced to time served and two years of supervised release for his role in a firearm crime.
Shawn Muldoon, 30, was convicted of Domestic Violence Offender in Possession of a Firearm and Ammunition and was sentenced by Chief Judge Jeffrey L. Viken, U.S. District Court, on January 2, 2014.
Muldoon’s troubles began in July 2012, when Pennington County sheriff’s deputies assisted a vehicle stuck on forest service land near Rapid City. During the vehicle search, investigators found a 9mm handgun and ammunition owned by Muldoon.
The discovery was significant because Muldoon is prohibited from possessing firearms due to a 2003 domestic violence conviction.
The investigation into Muldoon’s activities was a joint effort between the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office and the U.S. Forest Service.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah B. Collins prosecuted the case, which stemmed from a March 19, 2013, federal grand jury indictment. Muldoon had previously pleaded guilty to the offense on July 19, 2013.
As a result of the guilty plea, Muldoon was ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
