ROCKFORD, MICHIGAN – In a shocking case of wildlife trafficking, a Michigan man was sentenced for his role in transporting an illegally harvested deer across state lines without proper tags.
Robert Klawieter, 56, appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge John E. Simko on July 15, 2013, and pled guilty to a Lacey Act Violation. The court handed down a sentence of 1 year unsupervised probation, a $2,500 fine, $1,000 in restitution, and a $25 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
The charges stem from an incident occurring in November 2011, in which Klawieter knowingly transported, sold, received, and acquired one white-tailed buck deer in interstate commerce from South Dakota to Michigan, without the proper tag for the illegally harvested deer.
The investigation was conducted by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Assistant U.S. Attorney Meghan N. Dilges prosecuted the case.
