Local Man Sentenced to 7 Years for Attempted Child Sex Crime
A 24-year-old man from Longview, Washington was sentenced to 7 years and 6 months in federal prison for attempting to engage in unlawful sexual acts with a minor, according to the U.S. Attorney’s office in North Dakota. Timothy Joshua Adam Carnahan was sentenced by Chief United States District Judge Daniel L. Hovland on June 11, 2018
The investigation into Carnahan’s activities began when he responded to an ad on Craigslist that advertised the availability of a young female as an escort. Unbeknownst to Carnahan, the ad was placed online by an officer with the Bismarck Police Department acting in an undercover capacity as a 17-year-old female.
Carnahan arranged to pick up the minor female at a local shopping center and take her to his residence to engage in sexual acts. Upon arrival at the shopping center, Carnahan was arrested and later interviewed by law enforcement authorities, during which he admitted his intent to engage in sexual acts with a minor.
Carnahan has a prior sexual assault conviction from 2012 in Washington State, which prosecutors used as evidence in the case. Assistant United States Attorney Gary L. Delorme prosecuted the case, which was investigated by the Bismarck Police Department, the Bureau of Criminal Investigation, and Homeland Security Investigations.
The case highlights the importance of online safety and the dangers of human trafficking. It also serves as a reminder of the severity of child sex crimes and the need for strict penalties for those who commit them.
Carnahan will serve 7 years and 6 months in federal prison, followed by 10 years supervised release. His case is a sobering reminder of the devastating impact of child sex crimes and the importance of holding perpetrators accountable for their actions.
