TAMPA, FL – Ryan Cotton, 37, of Manatee County, is headed to federal prison for over 13 years after being convicted of flooding the streets with heroin and fentanyl. U.S. District Judge William Jung handed down the 13-year, 4-month sentence today, marking a significant blow to a local drug operation.
Cotton pleaded guilty on February 22, 2019, but the case stemmed from a 15-day period in late September and early October 2017. Court documents reveal Cotton wasn’t dealing in small amounts; he engaged in $19,000 worth of narcotics transactions with a confidential informant in just over a week. This wasn’t some back-alley hustle – this was a calculated attempt to profit from addiction.
The transactions didn’t go unnoticed. Law enforcement, fueled by intelligence gathered, quickly moved to secure search warrants for two properties linked to Cotton. What they found wasn’t just drugs. Officers seized heroin, fentanyl, a staggering $30,000 in cash, and a firearm – a clear indication that Cotton was serious about protecting his illicit enterprise. Assistant United States Attorneys Charlie D. Connally and Shauna H. Hale were the prosecutors who built the case and secured the conviction.
