MADISON, WIS. – A federal inmate has been sentenced to a long stint behind bars after being caught with methamphetamine in prison.
Marco Cota-Tamaura, 44, of Oxford, Wisconsin, was handed a one-year prison sentence by U.S. District Judge William M. Conley for possessing methamphetamine in prison.
Cota-Tamaura pleaded guilty to the charge on December 2, 2024, after he was caught with the illicit substance at the Federal Correctional Institution, Oxford, Wisconsin (FCI Oxford) on March 22, 2024.
A drug test revealed that Cota-Tamaura had methamphetamine in his system, and a subsequent search by prison staff turned up more of the substance.
According to the investigation, Cota-Tamaura was serving a prison sentence at the time of his arrest and had managed to achieve a reduced security level during his current term.
However, Judge Conley expressed disappointment at Cota-Tamaura’s actions, noting that the possession of methamphetamine presented a grave risk to both inmates and guards.
The charge against Cota-Tamaura was the result of an investigation conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Prisons. Assistant U.S. Attorney Steven Ayala prosecuted the case.
Cota-Tamaura’s sentence is a stark reminder of the consequences of possessing illicit substances in prison. As authorities continue to crack down on crime, it is clear that those who break the law will face severe penalties.
