Defendant’s Guilty Plea Rocks Health Care Community
Tampa, Florida – In a shocking turn of events, Marcus Anderson, the 34-year-old owner of a treatment facility in St. Petersburg, Florida, has pleaded guilty to health care fraud. This is a clear indication that those who seek to profit from the suffering of others will be brought to justice.
According to court documents, Anderson opened his treatment facility in April 2011. However, it was not until May 2015 that he began to engage in his nefarious activities. Over the course of the next three years, Anderson stole and misused the billing credentials of doctors to submit false and fraudulent claims to the Florida Medicaid program and related managed care organizations. These claims totalled a staggering $1.2 million.
The bogus claims submitted by Anderson included services that patients had never received, as well as claims for patients who were hospitalized or in residential living facilities at the time. He even went so far as to falsely claim that some patients had received counseling and related services at his treatment facility, when in reality, they were not even there. The treatment facility was eventually shut down in 2018, but the damage had already been done.
Anderson’s actions are a stark reminder of the importance of protecting our most vulnerable citizens from those who would seek to exploit them for personal gain. His guilty plea is a testament to the tireless efforts of law enforcement agencies and prosecutors who work tirelessly to bring these individuals to justice.
The case against Anderson was investigated by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services – Office of Inspector General (HHS-OIG) and the Florida Office of Attorney General’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit. It is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Kristen A. Fiore.
Anderson faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in federal prison. A sentencing date has not yet been set. As the community continues to rebuild and heal, one thing is clear: those who engage in health care fraud will be held accountable for their actions.
