Marcus Thompkins, 27, Pleads Guilty to Felon in Possession of a Firearm
PITTSBURGH – In a shocking turn of events, a resident of Pittsburgh has pleaded guilty to a charge of felon in possession of a firearm. 27-year-old Marcus Thompkins made the confession in federal court, as announced by Acting United States Attorney Soo C. Song.
According to the investigation, Thompkins knowingly possessed a firearm, namely a .40 caliber Smith and Wesson pistol, Model 40 VE and approximately fifty rounds of .40 caliber Winchester ammunition. At the time of the offense, Thompkins was on federal supervised release.
An Officer with the United States Probation Office observed him with the firearm, which led to a search of Thompkins’ home. The Probation Office and the United States Marshal Service conducted the search, resulting in the seizure of the firearm and ammunition.
United States District Judge Arthur J. Schwab is set to sentence Thompkins on October 19, 2017. The law provides for a maximum total sentence of 10 years in prison, a fine of $250,000, or both. Under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, the actual sentence imposed is based upon the seriousness of the offense and the prior criminal history of the defendant.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Brendan T. Conway on behalf of the government. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, United States Marshals Service, and United States Probation Office conducted the investigation that led to the prosecution of Thompkins.
In a statement, Acting United States Attorney Soo C. Song expressed her commitment to keeping the community safe. ‘We will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that those who break the law are held accountable,’ she said.
