A 27-year-old Mexican national illegally residing in Laredo has been ordered to federal prison for her role in a multi-year conspiracy to smuggle illegal aliens for financial gain.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Texas, Maria Rodriguez was sentenced to 48 months in federal prison for her involvement in the conspiracy, which resulted in the smuggling of over 1900 illegal aliens.
Rodriguez, 27, of Laredo, Texas, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to transport and harbor aliens in the United States, which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
Between 2018 and 2022, Rodriguez worked with others to smuggle aliens from Mexico into the United States, using various methods to evade detection by law enforcement.
During the conspiracy, Rodriguez and her co-conspirators transported aliens from Mexico to the United States, using vehicles and other means to bring them across the border.
The investigation into Rodriguez’s activities was led by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and the U.S. Border Patrol.
Rodriguez’s sentencing is a reminder of the ongoing threat posed by transnational organized crime groups, which continue to exploit vulnerable individuals and engage in smuggling operations that put lives at risk.
