New Mexico Woman Charged with Involuntary Manslaughter
A shocking crime has shaken the community in New Mexico. Mariah Chapo, a 26-year-old Navajo woman, has been arraigned in federal court on a charge of involuntary manslaughter.
According to the indictment and records, on February 11, 2022, Chapo crashed her vehicle after driving at a high rate of speed while intoxicated. The alleged homicide resulted in the death of an eight-month-old John Doe, who was left unsecured in the vehicle.
The incident occurred within the exterior boundaries of the Navajo Nation. The Gallup Resident Agency of the FBI Albuquerque Field Office investigated this case with assistance from the Navajo Police Department.
Assistant United States Attorney Matthew J. McGinley is prosecuting the case. Chapo will remain on conditions of release pending trial.
An indictment is only an allegation, and Chapo is presumed innocent until proven guilty. If convicted, she faces up to eight years in prison.
This case highlights the devastating consequences of reckless driving and drunk driving. It is a tragic reminder of the importance of road safety and the need for responsible behavior behind the wheel.
The community is left to grapple with the aftermath of this senseless tragedy. As the case moves forward, our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of the victim.
This is a developing story, and we will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
