GRIMY NEWS: A grim milestone was reached in Tucson as Carlos Correa, the ruthless marijuana kingpin, was sentenced to 25 years behind bars.
The 29-year-old Hereford native was handed down the sentence by Senior U.S. District Judge Raner C. Collins on June 3, 2019, for Conspiracy to Possess with Intent to Distribute more than 1,000 Kilograms of Marijuana. Correa’s reign of terror also included the chilling murder of a co-conspirator and his leadership role in a notorious marijuana trafficking organization.
The saga began on June 18, 2015, when authorities intercepted a vehicle laden with pot at the Willcox Border Patrol checkpoint. A cell phone was seized from the car, linking Correa to the massive drug operation.
ATF, Border Patrol, and local law enforcement agencies launched an intensive eight-month investigation, leading to the arrest of over 20 co-conspirators and the seizure of nearly 4,000 pounds of marijuana and several firearms, including obliterated AR-15 and AK-47s.
In a separate incident on February 26, 2016, Correa himself became accused of taking a life during a dispute involving marijuana load payments. He pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in Cochise County, earning an additional 16 years’ imprisonment.
Correa’s downfall was the result of a collaborative effort between ATF, U.S. Border Patrol, Arizona Department of Public Safety, and Sierra Vista Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Adam D. Rossi and Rui Wang handled the federal prosecution.
