Mario Cabrera, Immigration Document Fraud, Florida 2012

Clearwater Man Sentenced to 24 Months in Federal Prison for Immigration Document Fraud

Tampa, Florida – In a shocking case of immigration document fraud, Clearwater resident Mario Cabrera (34) was sentenced to 24 months in federal prison by U.S. District Judge James S. Moody, Jr. on November 26, 2012. This comes after Cabrera pleaded guilty to the charges on the same date.

According to court documents, Cabrera sold counterfeit documents, including driver’s licenses, social security cards, and permanent resident alien cards to a confidential informant on multiple occasions. Homeland Security Investigations special agents uncovered more than 100 fraudulent documents during a search warrant at Cabrera’s residence.

“When Homeland Security Investigations special agents executed a search warrant at Mr. Cabrera’s residence, they uncovered more than 100 fraudulent documents,” said Susan McCormick, special agent in charge of Homeland Security Investigations Tampa. “Mr. Cabrera was providing these documents to people trying to evade the legal immigration process. These individuals could be threats to public safety, or even worse, national security.”

The court also ordered Cabrera to forfeit electronics and computer equipment, which were used to commit the offense. This case was investigated by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations. It was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Sara C. Sweeney.
