HUMAN TRAFFICKER PLEADS GUILTY IN NEW YORK
Mario Elpidio Chavez Millan, a 19-year-old human trafficker from Albuquerque, New Mexico, has pleaded guilty to conspiring to transport illegal aliens throughout the United States, as well as a kidnapping conspiracy.
According to court documents, Chavez Millan worked with Mexican ‘coyotes’ to smuggle people into the country and then extorted them for additional money. He allegedly threatened his victims, telling them that they could not leave without paying him $1,000.
The New York State Police received a report from Individual-1, a relative of Victim-1, who had entered the country illegally with the assistance of ‘coyotes’ and was being transported by Chavez Millan. The police executed a traffic stop of Chavez Millan’s vehicle in Cortlandt, New York, and found several people in the vehicle, including Victim-1.
Chavez Millan’s passengers reported that he had threatened them during the drive, telling them that they could not leave without paying him an additional $1,000 and that he had previously killed someone for running away without paying.
Chavez Millan pled guilty to one count of conspiring to transport aliens throughout the United States, which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison. He is scheduled to be sentenced on August 7, 2024.
U.S. Attorney Damian Williams praised the investigative work of the FBI’s Hudson Valley Resident Agency and Safe Streets Task Force, as well as the New York State Police, in bringing Chavez Millan to justice.
The prosecution is being handled by the Office’s White Plains Division, with Assistant U.S. Attorney David Markewitz in charge of the case.
