Gentile Kahungu, Machinegun Possession, Iowa 2025

Marion, IA – In a gritty federal court ruling, Gentile Kahungu, 19, from Marion, Iowa, was sentenced on July 18, 2025, to 108 months in federal prison. The sentence stems from Kahungu’s possession of multiple machinegun conversion devices.

The evidence presented at the hearing revealed that Kahungu had a total of 18 such devices, two of which were connected to firearms. He was caught with some devices in his Marion home on June 25, 2024, and additional devices in Cedar Rapids when he was arrested later that day. His Glock firearm, equipped with a machinegun conversion device, was linked to two shootings in Marshalltown and Cedar Rapids.

Kahungu pleaded guilty to possession of a machinegun on January 31, 2025. United States District Court Chief Judge C.J. Williams sentenced him to 108 months’ imprisonment, followed by a three-year term of supervised release. There is no parole in the federal system.

The defendant is currently being held by the U.S. Marshals until transportation to a federal prison can be arranged. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Nicole L. Nagin and investigated by the ATF, Marshalltown Police Department, and Cedar Rapids Police Department.

This high-profile case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program dedicated to reducing violent crime and gun violence. Launched in May 2021, PSN strengthens community trust and supports organizations that prevent violence before it occurs.
