Defendants Sentenced for Kidnapping a Postal Carrier in Rochester, NY
A federal employee was kidnapped and threatened with death in a case that has led to two of the three defendants being sentenced to prison time. Mark Rogers, 39, and Joseph Way, 36, both of Rochester, NY, were convicted of kidnapping a federal employee.
Rogers was sentenced to serve 210 months in prison, while Way was sentenced to serve 168 months in prison. The sentencing is the result of an investigation by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and the Rochester Police Department.
According to the investigation, on November 16, 2019, Rogers and Way confronted a U.S. Postal Service mail carrier in the area of Second Street and Central Park in Rochester. The defendants accused the mail carrier of taking a package that contained cocaine, which they believed was worth $70,000.
The mail carrier was directed to a vehicle driven by Tashara Levans, the girlfriend of Rogers. Over the next two hours, she was threatened with death and coerced into providing the cocaine or $70,000. Eventually, the mail carrier was released unharmed.
The investigation was led by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, under the direction of Inspector-in-Charge Ketty Larco-Ward, Boston Division, and the Rochester Police Department, under the direction of Interim Chief David Smith.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert A. Marangola handled the case.
The sentencing of the two defendants comes after they were convicted of kidnapping a federal employee. The third defendant, Tashara Levans, is scheduled to be sentenced on July 8.
In a statement, Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert A. Marangola said, ‘This case is a prime example of the dangers that federal employees face on the job.’
The case is a reminder of the importance of protecting federal employees and the consequences of committing such heinous crimes.
