Violent crime, narcotics trafficking, and protecting democratic institutions top priorities for Mark Totten, the newly appointed U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Michigan, according to a statement made during his investiture ceremony at the Grand Rapids Center for Community Transformation.
Chief United States District Judge Hala Y. Jarbou administered the ceremonial oath of office, and Totten emphasized his commitment to addressing these critical issues, while also protecting Civil Rights.
Totten underscored his dedication to working with local, state, federal, and tribal agencies, as well as the community, to build trust and strengthen law enforcement and community relations.
As U.S. Attorney, Totten supervises a staff of approximately 42 attorneys and 44 support staff, covering 49 counties in the Western District of Michigan, including the western half of the state’s lower peninsula and the entire upper peninsula.
Totten was born and raised in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and prior to his appointment, he served as Chief Legal Counsel in the Executive Office of the Governor for the State of Michigan. He was a law professor at Michigan State University from 2008-2018 and a part-time Special Assistant U.S. Attorney handling criminal appeals in the Western District of Michigan from 2011-2013.
Totten received his B.A. from Cedarville College and his law degree and a Ph.D. in ethics from Yale University. He was nominated by President Joe Biden on November 12, 2021, and confirmed by the U.S. Senate on April 27, 2022.
Totten’s investiture ceremony was attended by judges, family, and members of the law enforcement, legal, and local communities. He expressed his honor to serve as the U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Michigan and lead a team dedicated to protecting the state.
