CLARKSBURG, WEST VIRGINIA – A ruthless scheme to scam insurance companies has been exposed, with a Preston County woman facing the consequences. Markitta Miller, 28, of Reedsville, West Virginia, pleaded guilty to one count of ‘Conspiracy to Commit Wire Fraud’ in federal court.

According to officials, Miller worked with others to orchestrate a vehicle accident and fabricate injuries to file false insurance claims. The crime spree lasted from March to July 2019 in Taylor and Preston Counties. Assistant U.S. Attorney Andrew R. Cogar is prosecuting the case on behalf of the government.

The investigation, led by the ATF and the West Virginia Insurance Commission Fraud Unit, uncovered the extent of Miller’s scheme. U.S. Magistrate Judge Michael John Aloi presided over the hearing, where Miller admitted to her role in the conspiracy.
