Felon in Possession of a Firearm Lands Jackson Man in Hot Water

A 21-year-old man from Jackson, Mississippi, has landed in trouble with the law after being indicted for being a felon in possession of a firearm. Marquez Dante Scott, a resident of Jackson, was charged by a federal grand jury on June 28 with knowingly possessing a firearm after a previous conviction for a crime punishable by a term exceeding one year.

According to the indictment, Scott’s actions put him in violation of federal law, which prohibits felons from possessing firearms. The charge carries a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison, should Scott be convicted.

The case against Scott is part of the Justice Department’s Violent Crime Initiative, a collaborative effort between federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies to address violent crimes in Jackson and surrounding areas. The initiative aims to prosecute violent crimes committed by gang members and associates, using federal laws and resources to prevent further violence.

Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Nicole M. Argentieri and U.S. Attorney Todd W. Gee for the Southern District of Mississippi announced the indictment. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives investigated the case, with assistance from the Capitol Police Department.

Trial Attorney Lakeita F. Rox-Love of the Criminal Division’s Violent Crime and Racketeering Section and Assistant U.S. Attorney Matt Allen for the Southern District of Mississippi are prosecuting the case.

It is essential to note that an indictment is merely an allegation, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The outcome of this case is yet to be determined and will depend on the evidence presented in court.
