Dewey Shane Marrowbone, Failure to Register as a Sex Offender, South Dakota 2014

Brendan V. Johnson, United States Attorney for the District of South Dakota, announced that Dewey Shane Marrowbone, a 45-year-old man from Box Elder, South Dakota, has been charged with Failure to Register as a Sex Offender.

According to the indictment, Marrowbone was required to register under the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act, but knowingly failed to register and update his sex offender registration between July 4, 2014, and August 20, 2014.

Marrowbone was indicted on September 16, 2014, and appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno on September 25, 2014, where he pled not guilty to the indictment. The maximum penalty upon conviction is up to 10 years in custody and/or a $250,000 fine, at least 5 years up to life of supervised release, and $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Restitution may also be ordered.

The investigation is being conducted by the U.S. Marshals Service and the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services. Assistant U.S. Attorney Mikal Hanson is prosecuting the case.

Marrowbone was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service. A trial date has not been set.

It’s worth noting that the charge is merely an accusation and Marrowbone is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

The indictment alleges that Marrowbone’s failure to register and update his registration was a deliberate act, and he is now facing serious consequences for his actions.
