FRANKFORT, Ky. – Joseph David Martin, 43, of Henry County, Kentucky, will spend the next four decades behind bars for a horrific pattern of abuse and exploitation. Martin was sentenced to 40 years in federal prison for producing, distributing, and possessing child pornography, a sentence handed down on April 11 by U.S. District Judge Gregory Van Tatenhove.
The case, a grim reminder of the predators lurking in our communities, revealed Martin’s repeated sexual exploitation of a teenager, beginning when the victim was just 13 years old. Prosecutors presented evidence at the 2016 trial detailing the sustained abuse, and sickeningly, showed Martin videotaped portions of the encounters – creating evidence that would ultimately seal his fate.
Federal sentencing guidelines demand Martin serve at least 85 percent of his 40-year term, meaning he won’t be eligible for release for over three decades. Acting U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Kentucky, Carlton S. Shier, IV, delivered a stark warning: “The exploitation of children is a particularly vile crime, and we will prosecute these cases to the fullest extent of the law.” Assistant U.S. Attorney David Marye spearheaded the prosecution, diligently presenting the evidence and securing the conviction.
