CONCORD, NH – A 55-year-old New York woman has confessed to a brazen, multi-state bank fraud operation, preying on Citizens Bank account holders across the Northeast. Mary Baird, of New York, New York, pleaded guilty in federal court today to charges stemming from a year-long scheme that netted her over $36,000.
According to court documents, Baird systematically targeted Citizens Bank branches in New Hampshire and other states between September 2020 and May 2021. She wasn’t relying on sophisticated hacking or digital trickery, but old-fashioned deception. Baird presented fraudulent identification – including stolen Social Security numbers – belonging to legitimate bank customers. She then attempted to cash fake checks made out to those individuals or simply withdraw funds directly from their accounts.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office detailed that Baird successfully swindled the bank out of $36,780 over the course of at least 13 separate visits to various branches. But her greed didn’t stop there. She also attempted to steal an additional $15,450, though those attempts were unsuccessful. It’s a clear indication of the scope of her operation and her willingness to repeatedly risk arrest.
Even after her initial arrest and release under certain conditions, Baird doubled down on her criminal behavior. She traveled to Pennsylvania and attempted to cash another fraudulent check – this one for $4,990. This time, she presented a phony New Jersey driver’s license bearing the name of yet another victim, demonstrating a callous disregard for the law and those she targeted.
The Secret Service led the investigation into Baird’s scheme, a clear demonstration of the agency’s continued focus on financial crimes. Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Alexander S. Chen is prosecuting the case. The agency’s involvement suggests the scheme may have been larger or more complex than initially apparent.
Baird is now facing sentencing on December 19, 2022. While the exact length of her sentence remains to be determined, she’ll have plenty of time to reflect on her choices and the damage she inflicted on unsuspecting account holders. This case serves as a stark reminder that even seemingly low-tech crimes can have significant financial and emotional consequences.
