Two brothers, Suleman Yusuf Mohamed and Gandi Yusuf Mohamed, have pleaded guilty in a brazen scheme to loot millions from the Feeding Our Future program in Minnesota. The scam, which has seen 65 defendants convicted so far, involved vendors posing as food suppliers to the Federal Child Nutrition Program.
The brothers, owners of Star Distribution, were paid $10.1 million to provide food for over 4.8 million meals. But instead of buying food, they spent peanuts on provisions and pocketed most of the cash. Suleman used the money for personal expenses and transferred millions to co-conspirators, including his sister Ikram.
Gandi was charged with money laundering and pleaded guilty on April 9. His brother Suleman pleaded guilty to wire fraud and agreed to pay $8.7 million in restitution. The scheme’s masterminds continue to evade justice, but their accomplices are being held accountable.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office, led by Daniel N. Rosen, has been cracking down on the Feeding Our Future scam, which has been linked to the National Fraud Enforcement Division. The division’s core mission is to root out taxpayer dollars being stolen or misused.
