WILMINGTON, Del. – A bold move by Eric Kappesser, 27, from Stevensville, Maryland, has landed him in hot water as he faces federal charges for impersonating an FBI agent and possessing unauthorized insignia. David C. Weiss, Acting United States Attorney for the District of Delaware, announced that a federal grand jury indicted Kappesser on two counts of impersonating a federal agent and one count of unauthorized possession of a badge or insignia.
According to the indictment, Kappesser donned the guise of an FBI agent between April and October 2016. He not only represented himself as such but also secured a law enforcement discount when buying firearms accessories in September 2016. The audacity didn’t end there; he was caught wearing a replica FBI badge around his neck in or around October 2016.
Acting U.S. Attorney Weiss had stern words for those who would dare to misuse the trust and authority of law enforcement: ‘Individuals who impersonate law enforcement officers violate the public trust and pose a risk to public safety. Such conduct disrespects the true heroes who daily place themselves in harm’s way to protect our communities.’ Kappesser faces up to 3 years in prison for each impersonation charge and an additional 6 months for unauthorized badge possession.
This case is another grim reminder of the lengths some will go to undermine legitimate law enforcement efforts. It was a joint investigation by the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms that led to Kappesser’s downfall. Assistant United States Attorney Lesley Wolf is handling the prosecution.
As always, the charges in the indictment are merely allegations, and Kappesser is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
