Attempted Sex Trafficking Lands Maryland Man Behind Bars

A Maryland man has been sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment for attempting to traffic a 12-year-old girl for sex.

Michael Francis Fox Jr., 44, was arrested in August 2013 as part of an undercover sex trafficking operation conducted during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota.

Fox responded to a law enforcement-generated Internet advertisement that purported to offer young girls for sex and proceeded to negotiate the terms of the sexual encounter.

He was subsequently arrested with a negotiated amount of money and condoms in his possession. Fox was one of nine men federally indicted as a result of the operation, which targeted individuals willing to pay to have sex with underage girls obtained through the Internet.

Of the nine original defendants, five have pled guilty, with three already sentenced and the other two awaiting sentencing. One defendant was found guilty by a federal jury, and the remaining three are scheduled for trial.

The investigation was conducted by the South Dakota Internet Crimes Against Children Taskforce, the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Rapid City Police Department, the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office, and the Meade County Sheriff’s Office.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah B. Collins prosecuted the case, and Fox was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.

As part of his sentence, Fox will be required to register as a sex offender and forfeit his 2007 Suzuki motor vehicle. He was also ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund and serve three years of supervised release.
