Richard Wayne Johnson, Child Pornography, Florida 2014

Tampa, FL – In a shocking turn of events, a disturbing case of child pornography has led to a harsh sentence for 68-year-old Richard Wayne Johnson of St. Petersburg, Florida. Johnson was sentenced to nine years in federal prison for transporting and possessing child pornography, as well as a lifetime of supervised release.

According to court documents, an undercover agent downloaded Internet files containing child pornography in April 2014 using a file sharing program. Further investigation traced the host computer back to Johnson’s residence, leading agents to execute a federal search warrant on May 1, 2014. During the search and a subsequent forensic examination, agents found over 3,600 videos and 476 images depicting child pornography on Johnson’s computer, including some involving toddlers.

The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the St. Petersburg Police Department, and the Largo Police Department. It was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Joseph W. Swanson.

Johnson pleaded guilty to the charges on August 25, 2014. In addition to the prison sentence, Johnson was ordered to pay $7,000 in restitution to the victims of the offenses and was fined $17,500. He was also forced to forfeit a desktop computer that had been used to facilitate the offenses.

The case is part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 by the government to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. Led by United States Attorneys’ Offices and the Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section, Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who sexually exploit children, and to identify and rescue victims.

Richard Wayne Johnson’s sentence serves as a stark reminder of the severity of child pornography offenses and the importance of protecting our nation’s children from exploitation. His case is a testament to the dedication of law enforcement agencies and prosecutors in pursuing justice for victims of these heinous crimes.

The government’s efforts to combat child pornography are ongoing, and cases like Johnson’s serve as a warning to those who would seek to exploit children.
