TAMPA, FL – William Patrick King, 35, of Columbia, Maryland, has admitted to a horrifying attempt to create child pornography, a crime that underscores the dark underbelly of online predation. King pleaded guilty today in federal court, facing a minimum mandatory penalty of 35 years in prison, with the potential for a life sentence. The sentencing date remains to be determined, but the weight of his actions is already bearing down.
According to court documents, between December 2016 and February 2017, King systematically preyed upon a 17-year-old girl, attempting to coerce her into participating in sexually explicit acts for the purpose of producing child pornography. His methods were calculated and deceitful: he connected with the victim on a teen-dating website and established communication through a barrage of digital channels – phone calls, Facebook, Skype, and text messages. Crucially, King lied about his age, falsely claiming to be 18 while he was, in fact, a 34-year-old adult.
The plea agreement details King’s relentless pursuit of illicit material. He directly requested the girl produce and send him child pornography. The interactions escalated to nude chats, and the victim, tragically, did send him photographs. This isn’t a case of fleeting online contact; it’s a sustained effort to exploit a vulnerable minor, a calculated attempt to create and possess deeply damaging material.
What makes this case particularly disturbing is King’s history. He is a registered sex offender with two prior convictions in Maryland for the sexual exploitation of children. This isn’t a first offense; it’s a pattern of predatory behavior, a clear indication that King poses a significant and ongoing threat to children. The system failed to protect potential victims before, and now he’s facing the consequences of his repeated offenses.
The investigation was spearheaded by the FBI, with the prosecution handled by Assistant United States Attorney Jennifer L. Peresie. This case is part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in 2006 by the Department of Justice, aimed at combating the escalating epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. The project mobilizes federal, state, and local resources to identify, apprehend, and prosecute offenders and rescue victims.
Project Safe Childhood isn’t just about arrests and convictions; it’s about a commitment to protecting the most vulnerable members of our society. This case serves as a grim reminder of the dangers lurking online and the urgent need for continued vigilance and robust law enforcement efforts.
