A luxurious Beverly Hills mansion worth millions is on the chopping block after a scheme to defraud the U.S. military and bribe an Iraqi official unraveled. Masoud Barzani, a contractor at the center of the scandal, allegedly used $30 million in ill-gotten gains to purchase the lavish property in 2018. The funds were transferred from a trust established in Virginia for Barzani’s private benefit.

The FBI, Defense Criminal Investigative Service, and IRS Criminal Investigation joined forces to crack the case, which was handled by Deputy Chief Michael B. Redmann and Senior Trial Attorney Steven Parker of the Justice Department’s Money Laundering, Narcotics and Forfeiture Section. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California and the Justice Department’s Office of International Affairs also provided significant support.

The investigation revealed that Barzani’s scheme involved transferring funds from the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) to his trust, which was then used to purchase the Beverly Hills mansion and renovate the property from 2019 to 2022. The Justice Department is now seeking to forfeit the mansion, citing the alleged proceeds of the scheme.

A civil complaint has been filed, but it’s essential to note that the government must prove the assets are subject to forfeiture by a preponderance of the evidence. The case highlights the efforts of the Money Laundering, Narcotics and Forfeiture Section to take the profit out of crime, eliminate drug cartels, and protect the U.S. financial system.

The outcome of the case is still pending, but the forfeiture of the Beverly Hills mansion serves as a reminder of the consequences of corruption and the importance of holding individuals accountable for their actions.
