Mass Shooting Rocks Pine Ridge

In a shocking turn of events, a mass shooting in Pine Ridge, South Dakota, has left a community in mourning. On Thursday, April 6, 2017, a half-day conference addressing gun violence in Indian country will be held in Pine Ridge, in conjunction with National Crime Victim’s Rights Week.

The event, hosted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the Oglala Sioux Tribe, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives, will feature a powerful panel discussion with Nikki Munholand, a Tribal Administrator who miraculously survived the mass shooting. Munholand was present during a tribal council meeting in which four tribal members, including the Tribal Chairman, were brutally murdered.

Also sharing their story of survival and the devastating impact on the community will be Sheriff Michael Poindexter, one of the responding officers who worked closely with the victims. The conference will provide a platform for local victim service providers to showcase their services and offer support to those affected by the tragedy.

A ceremony will be held after the conference to honor four individuals who have provided outstanding services to victims of crime in Indian country. The event will be held at the SuAnn Big Crow Center in Pine Ridge, located at 1 Positive Place, from 10:00 am – 1:00 pm. The public is welcome, and a free lunch will be served.

The conference comes as a stark reminder of the need for increased awareness and support for victims of gun violence in Indian country. As the community comes together to heal and rebuild, it is clear that the impact of this tragedy will be felt for years to come.

The events will be held in conjunction with National Crime Victim’s Rights Week, a time to recognize the bravery and resilience of victims and their families. By sharing their stories and experiences, the community can work towards creating a safer and more supportive environment for all.
