Massachusetts Man Faces 20 Years for Fentanyl Possession
A Lawrence, Massachusetts man is set to spend up to 20 years behind bars after pleading guilty to a fentanyl charge in New Hampshire federal court.
Genfry Martinez, 20, was found in possession of 68.67 grams of the Schedule II controlled substance fentanyl after a traffic stop by the New Hampshire State Police on February 11, 2016. Lab results confirmed the substance to be fentanyl, a highly addictive and deadly narcotic responsible for a large number of overdose deaths in the state.
“The narcotic drug fentanyl is an incredibly dangerous substance responsible for a large number of overdose deaths in New Hampshire,” stated United States Attorney Emily Gray Rice. “I will continue to prioritize the prosecution of individuals who attempt to profit from the sale of this deadly drug.”
Martinez will be detained pending sentencing, which is presently scheduled for August 9, 2016 in front of United States District Judge Paul J. Barbadoro. The statutory maximum sentence is 20 years in prison and criminal fines of up to $1,000,000.
The case was investigated by the New Hampshire State Police and the Drug Enforcement Administration and is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Georgiana L. Konesky. Martinez’s actual sentence will be determined by the court at sentencing after a presentence investigation report is completed.
U.S. Attorney Rice has vowed to continue prioritizing the prosecution of individuals who attempt to profit from the sale of fentanyl, which she says is a major contributor to the state’s overdose epidemic.
Martinez’s arrest is a reminder of the dangers posed by fentanyl, a highly potent opioid that is often mixed with other substances and can be deadly in small doses.
