Matthew Hamill, Child Pornography Distribution, New York 2017

Grimy Times has learned that Matthew Hamill, a former school bus driver, was sentenced to seven years in prison in connection with his distribution and possession of child pornography.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, Hamill, 26, of Wurtsboro, New York, and Garner, North Carolina, pleaded guilty in January 2017 to one count of transportation of child pornography before U.S. Magistrate Judge Judith C. McCarthy.

Hamill, who worked as a school bus driver for the Minisink Valley Central School District in Orange County, New York, from March 2014 to August 2015, distributed images and videos of child pornography via email from March 2012 to March 2014.

After becoming aware of the federal investigation, Hamill attempted to delete evidence of the child pornography, but a forensic examination of his computer, which was seized during the execution of a search warrant at his residence, recovered 493 child pornography images.

A review of Hamill’s emails obtained by search warrant showed that he sent 94 emails attaching a total of 135 images and 14 videos of child pornography.

In addition to the prison sentence, Hamill was sentenced to five years of supervised release. Judge Kenneth M. Karas also ordered Hamill to pay $15,000 in restitution to victims of his crime.

The FBI’s outstanding investigative work was praised by Acting Manhattan U.S. Attorney Joon H. Kim.

This case is being handled by the Office’s White Plains Division, with Assistant United States Attorney Won S. Shin in charge of the prosecution.
