Matthew Leyvas, Second-Degree Murder, Arizona 2024

Tucson Man Charged with Second-Degree Murder, Tucson AZ, 2024

A federal grand jury has indicted Matthew Leyvas, 28, of Tucson, on one count of Second-Degree Murder, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, District of Arizona. Leyvas, an enrolled member of the Pascua Yaqui Tribe, is accused of stabbing the victim multiple times on August 8, 2024. The victim was transported to Banner University Medical Center but was pronounced dead shortly after arriving.

The indictment alleges that Leyvas committed the crime, which carries a maximum penalty of life in prison, a fine of up to $250,000, and up to five years of supervised release. Second-Degree Murder is a serious charge that could have severe consequences for Leyvas if he is found guilty.

An indictment is simply a method by which a person is charged with criminal activity and raises no inference of guilt. An individual is presumed innocent until evidence is presented to a jury that establishes guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. This means that Leyvas has not yet been proven guilty and is entitled to a fair trial.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Pascua Yaqui Police Department conducted the investigation in this case. Assistant United States Attorney Micah Schmit, District of Arizona, Tucson, is handling the prosecution. This case is a reminder of the importance of law enforcement and the justice system in keeping our communities safe.
