OKLAHOMA CITY – Matthew Ray Hutcherson, 32, of Choctaw, Oklahoma, will spend the next eight years in federal prison after a judge handed down a 96-month sentence for being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm. The case, stemming from a terrifying incident involving his ex-girlfriend, highlights a pattern of violent behavior and disregard for the law.
The trouble began May 18, 2021, when Hutcherson allegedly pointed a gun at his former partner’s head. The woman reported the threat, triggering a search of his residence by authorities. The search yielded at least one firearm, solidifying the charge against him. Hutcherson subsequently pleaded guilty on September 8, 2021, acknowledging his illegal possession of the weapon.
U.S. District Judge David L. Russell didn’t mince words during sentencing, citing Hutcherson’s extensive criminal history and the clear danger he posed to the community. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Stan West and Chelsie Pratt secured the conviction and argued for a substantial sentence, emphasizing the gravity of the situation. The case falls under “Operation 922,” a Western District of Oklahoma initiative focused on aggressively prosecuting federal firearms crimes linked to domestic violence – a clear indicator of the escalating concern surrounding such cases.
“Operation 922” is part of the broader Department of Justice’s Project Safe Neighborhoods, designed to reduce gun violence and enforce existing federal firearms laws. Following his prison term, Hutcherson will face an additional three years of supervised release.
