MUSKOGEE, OK – Dalton Elzie Hunter, 29, of McCurtain, Oklahoma, is headed to federal prison for 37 months after pleading guilty to being a Felon in Possession of a Firearm. The case, a grim reminder of the revolving door of crime in rural Oklahoma, stemmed from a routine traffic stop that uncovered a cache of weapons and a criminal history.
On October 26, 2021, Haskell County Sheriff’s Office deputies pulled over Hunter. It wasn’t a high-speed chase or a drug bust, just a standard traffic stop. But the routine quickly turned serious when deputies discovered four firearms in Hunter’s possession. A quick check revealed Hunter wasn’t legally allowed to have any of them – he’s a convicted felon.
Federal investigators with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) joined the Haskell County Sheriff’s Office in building the case. While the specifics of Hunter’s prior conviction haven’t been released, the law is clear: convicted felons are prohibited from possessing firearms. Hunter didn’t contest the charges, entering a guilty plea on April 13, 2022.
The sentencing took place in Muskogee, with Chief Judge Ronald A. White of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Oklahoma handing down the 37-month sentence. It’s a non-parolable sentence, meaning Hunter won’t be eligible for early release. The judge clearly wasn’t impressed with any attempts at leniency.
Hunter is now in the custody of the U.S. Marshal, awaiting transfer to a designated Bureau of Prisons facility. He’ll join a growing population of federal inmates, another statistic in the ongoing battle against firearm-related crime. The ATF’s Dallas Field Division oversaw the investigation.
