East Stroudsburg Man Indicted for Heroin Trafficking

SCRANTON, Pennsylvania – Maurice Garvin, a 27-year-old man from East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, has been indicted on drug trafficking charges. According to the indictment, Garvin distributed and possessed with the intent to distribute heroin on two occasions and cocaine on one occasion in April 2016, in Monroe County, Pennsylvania.

Garvin allegedly committed these offenses within 1,000 feet of a playground, sparking concerns about the safety of local communities. The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Stroud Area Regional Police Department, and the Pennsylvania State Police.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Sean A. Camoni is prosecuting the case, which is part of a district-wide initiative to combat the nationwide epidemic of heroin use and distribution. The Heroin Initiative targets heroin traffickers operating in the Middle District of Pennsylvania and is a coordinated effort among federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies.

Indictments are only allegations, and Garvin is presumed innocent unless and until found guilty in court. A sentence following a finding of guilt is imposed by the Judge after consideration of the applicable federal sentencing statutes and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines.

The maximum penalty under federal law for this offense is 20 years’ imprisonment, a term of supervised release following imprisonment, and a fine. However, the statutory maximum penalty is not an accurate indicator of the potential sentence for a specific defendant, as the Judge must consider various factors, including the nature and circumstances of the offense, the defendant’s history and characteristics, and the need to punish the defendant, protect the public, and provide for the defendant’s educational, vocational, and medical needs.

Garvin is currently facing the possibility of up to 20 years in prison and a hefty fine. The case serves as a reminder of the dangers of heroin trafficking and the importance of law enforcement efforts to combat this issue. As the investigation continues, Garvin’s fate will be determined in the courts.
