A 41-year-old McAlester woman has been sentenced for possessing a firearm after being convicted of a felony offense, according to the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Oklahoma.
Lawanna Renee Pogue, 41, of McAlester, was sentenced to time served for one count of Felon in Possession of a Firearm, a federal offense. The charges stemmed from a traffic stop by the Pittsburg County Sheriff’s Office on December 25, 2022.
Deputies observed a traffic infraction and stopped Pogue’s vehicle, locating a .22 caliber firearm in the trunk compartment. Pogue later admitted to possessing the firearm despite her status as a convicted felon.
The investigation was conducted by the Pittsburg County Sheriff’s Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Assistant United States Attorney Joshua Satter represented the United States in the case.
U.S. District Judge Keith Starrett, sitting by assignment, presided over the hearing in Muskogee. Pogue pleaded guilty on April 19, 2023, to the charge. The specific details of her prior felony conviction were not disclosed in the court documents.
The sentence brings an end to Pogue’s federal case, but it remains to be seen what impact this will have on her future. The United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Oklahoma will continue to prosecute those who break federal laws, including those related to firearms.
