TYLER, Texas – The grim reality of drug trafficking struck Smith County when Clinton Daniel McCaa and Tara McDonald faced federal prison sentences for methamphetamine violations. U.S. Attorney John M. Bales announced the sentencing today.
McCaa, 32, from Whitehouse, Texas, entered a guilty plea on January 9, 2013, to conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute methamphetamine. Today, he was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Leonard E. Davis to 80 months in federal prison.
McDonald, 40, of Tyler, Texas, also pleaded guilty on the same date, charged with maintaining a place for the distribution and use of methamphetamine. Her sentence, imposed by Judge Davis, was 38 months behind bars.
Their downfall began in 2011 when McCaa procured meth from Clinton Squires of Terrell, Texas, and distributed it throughout Tyler. During this time, he resided with McDonald at her Meadow Creek Drive residence in Tyler. Evidence revealed that McDonald was aware of McCaa’s activities and permitted him to store illegal substances at her home.
Their federal indictment, returned on May 2, 2012, laid out the drug crimes they faced. The Texas Department of Public Safety investigated the case, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Mary Ann Cozby prosecuted it.
This sentencing underscores the ongoing battle against methamphetamine in Texas and sends a stark message to those who would deal in its deadly reach.
