McComb, Ohio – A shocking incident unfolded last June when Ronald E. Deal, Sr., a 56-year-old resident of McComb, was charged with aiming a laser pointer at a Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center Life Flight helicopter.
The daring act occurred on June 17, as the emergency chopper was en-route from the hospital to Bluffton Airport, according to Steven M. Dettelbach, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio.
Should Deal, Sr. be found guilty, his sentence will be determined by the Court based on a review of various factors, including his prior criminal record (if any), his role in the offense, and the characteristics of the violation. The maximum sentence, however, will not exceed the statutory limit, with most sentences expected to fall below that threshold.
This case is being investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Joseph R. Wilson. As always, it should be noted that an indictment is merely a charge and does not prove guilt; defendants are entitled to a fair trial where the government must prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
For those unfamiliar with Deal, Sr.’s background, his previous criminal record has yet to be disclosed, pending review by the Court. The severity of this offense underscores the potential danger posed by misuse of laser pointers and the importance of maintaining safety around medical emergency operations.
