Newark, N.J. – Lamar McCullough, 30, of Essex County, was convicted by a federal jury on June 7, 2024, for unlawful possession of ammunition by a convicted felon. The trial took place before U.S. District Judge Katherine Hayden in Newark federal court.
McCullough’s conviction stems from an incident on March 5, 2021, when he was caught shooting a victim four times in Newark. Four 9-millimeter shell casings were recovered at the scene. The felon in possession of ammunition charge carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a fine of $250,000.
The case was part of the Newark Violent Crime Initiative (VCI), a collaborative effort formed to combat violent crime in and around Newark. Agencies involved include federal, state, county, and city law enforcement, working together to ensure public safety.
U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger credited the Newark Police Department, Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, and FBI for their roles in the investigation. Sentencing is scheduled for October 8, 2024.
The government’s case was handled by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Jessica Ecker and Katherine Calle. McCullough will now face the severe consequences of his actions.
