McKees Rocks Man Faces 10 Years for Fraud

A 25-year-old man from McKees Rocks, Pennsylvania, has pleaded guilty to a serious crime that could land him behind bars for a decade. Joseph E. Placzek, a resident of Allegheny County, admitted to a charge of access device fraud in federal court.

According to court documents, Placzek opened credit cards in another person’s name at Capital One bank, using them to make purchases at various retailers, including Carnival Cruise, Amazon.com, and Home Depot. The total amount of the fraudulent purchases came to approximately $69,000.

Placzek’s guilty plea was entered before United States District Judge Terrence F. McVerry, who scheduled sentencing for November 11, 2016, at 10 a.m. The law provides for a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, a fine of $250,000, or both.

Assistant United States Attorney Gregory C. Melucci is prosecuting the case on behalf of the government. Inspectors from Homeland Security Investigations and the United States Postal Inspection Service, as part of the Western Pennsylvania Financial Crimes Task Force, conducted the investigation that led to Placzek’s guilty plea.

The task force is a collaborative effort between the United States Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Pennsylvania, the United States Secret Service, the United States Postal Inspection Service, the Department of Homeland Security, the Allegheny County District Attorney’s Office, the Allegheny County Police Department, the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police, and the Pennsylvania State Police.
