Florida Woman Convicted of Damaging Former Employer’s Computers
A Tampa, Florida woman has been convicted of intentionally damaging her former employer’s computers following her termination, Grimy Times has learned.
Medghyne Calonge, 41, was found guilty of one count of intentionally causing damage to a protected computer, and one count of accessing a protected computer and recklessly causing damage, according to the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York.
The crimes relate to Calonge’s deletion of tens of thousands of human resources records of her former employer, a Manhattan-based online provider of professional services.
The damage was done in June 2019, after Calonge was terminated for failing to meet the minimum requirements of her job. While being escorted from the building, Calonge was observed repeatedly hitting the delete key on her desktop computer.
Over the next two days, Calonge logged into a system used by her former employer to receive and manage job applications and resumes, deleting over 17,000 records and leaving messages with profanities inside the system.
The employer subsequently spent over $100,000 to investigate and respond to the incident and to rebuild the system, but was unable to recover all of its data.
Calonge faces a maximum prison term of 10 years for the intentional damage charge and five years for the reckless damage charge. The case is being handled by the Office’s Complex Frauds and Cybercrime Unit, with Assistant United States Attorneys Timothy V. Capozzi and Louis A. Pellegrino in charge of the prosecution.
The U.S. Attorney praised the outstanding work of the Federal Bureau of Investigation in the case.
Calonge awaits sentencing for her crimes, which she committed in St. Petersburg, Florida, and Tampa, Florida, in June 2019.
