CONCORD, NH – In a shocking turn of events, New Hampshire is witnessing a surge in complaints from Medicare beneficiaries who have received COVID-19 tests they never requested. This disturbing trend raises concerns that individuals may be using and potentially continue to use Medicare information fraudulently to bill the federal government.
U.S. Attorney Jane E. Young and New Hampshire Attorney General John M. Formella have come forward to address this emerging scam. They warn that Medicare information can be as valuable to scammers as credit card or social security numbers.
Attorney General Formella stated, “Stealing taxpayer-funded resources from our vulnerable neighbors will not be tolerated in the Granite State. We are actively working with our law enforcement partners to detect and disrupt this type of fraud.” He emphasizes that signs of this illegal activity should be reported immediately.
U.S. Attorney Young added, “Unfortunately, the pandemic provided fraudsters with many opportunities to take advantage of medical needs and services to benefit themselves. This new and emerging scam is directed at stealing from U.S. taxpayers, by charging Medicare for unwanted and unnecessary COVID-19 test kits. Please protect yourselves- do not ever give personal or medical information to obtain free pandemic related products, including test kits, vaccines, and other services. Medicare will not call you and offer COVID-19 related products.”
The authorities urge anyone receiving unsolicited COVID-19 test kits or requests for their Medicare information to report it to the U.S. Health and Human Services, Office of the Inspector General (www.oig.gov/fraud/report-fraud) or call 1-800-HHS-TIPS (1-800-447-8477).
As the situation unfolds, law enforcement officials are working tirelessly to detect and disrupt this type of fraud. They are warning the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity immediately.
With the rise of Medicare scams in New Hampshire, it is essential for seniors and their families to be aware of the risks involved. They should never give out personal or medical information to obtain free pandemic-related products, including test kits, vaccines, and other services.
