Defendant’s Descent into Darkness: A Murder for Hire Plot Unfolds
In a shocking turn of events, 48-year-old Melody Sasser of Knoxville, Tennessee, was sentenced to 100 months in prison for her involvement in a murder for hire plot. The scheme, which unfolded on the dark web, saw Sasser use a site known as the Online Killers Market to orchestrate the murder of an Alabama resident.
According to court documents, Sasser provided photographs and location information of the intended victim, requesting that the killing appear ‘to seem random or accident.’ In exchange for the anticipated murder, Sasser transmitted nearly $10,000 in cryptocurrency to the would-be assassins. The plot, however, was unsuccessful, and Sasser was arrested, followed by a search of her home.
Law enforcement discovered a journal listing several hitman websites, a handwritten account of communications with the Online Killers Market, and a stack of U.S. currency underneath a sticky note listing a Bitcoin address. The discovery shed light on the extent of Sasser’s involvement in the sinister plot.
United States Attorney Francis M. Hamilton III and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Special Agent in Charge Rana Saoud made the announcement, commending the efforts of HSI Knoxville and HSI Birmingham, along with the Knoxville Police Department and the Prattville, Alabama Police Department, for their assistance in the investigation.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Anne-Marie Svolto is prosecuting the case, which has left the community reeling. The charges against Sasser stem from an investigation that exposed the darkest corners of the internet and the depths of human depravity.
As Sasser begins her 100-month sentence, she will also be required to pay over $5,389.31 in restitution to the victim. The sentence serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of engaging in such heinous crimes.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of the dark web and the importance of law enforcement’s efforts to combat such crimes.
As the investigation continues to unfold, one thing is clear: the dark web is a breeding ground for sinister plots, and those who engage in such activities will be brought to justice.
