Roosevelt Wilson, Machine Gun Conversion Devices, Tennessee 2024

MEMPHIS, TN – In a tough stance against illegal firearms, Roosevelt Wilson, 43, of Memphis, has been sentenced to five years in federal prison for possession of 25 machine gun conversion devices, commonly referred to as ‘switches’. United States Attorney Kevin Ritz broke the news of the sentence today.

A federal judge’s gavel echoed through the courtroom after agents from U. S. Customs and Border Protection intercepted a package containing the deadly contraband. Addressed to Wilson, the package contained 25 conversion devices capable of transforming semi-automatic firearms into fully automatic weapons, drastically increasing their rate of fire.

The case took an eerie turn on February 28, 2023, when officers conducted a controlled delivery of the package to Wilson’s address. The defendant was no stranger to confrontation as he led police on a high-speed chase through residential streets, discarding the package and a firearm along his escape route. Both items were recovered.

Investigations revealed that the firearm discovered at the scene was a .40 caliber, Glock-style gun with no serial numbers. It was also equipped with a machine gun conversion device, further solidifying the gravity of Wilson’s crime. On January 12, 2024, Wilson pleaded guilty to possession and unlawful importation of the devices.

United States District Judge Thomas L. Parker didn’t mince words during sentencing on April 25, 2024, handing down a 60-month federal prison sentence followed by three years of supervised release.

Homeland Security Investigations led the investigation with U. S. Customs and Border Protection, while the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, Southaven Police Department, and the United States Marshals Service provided valuable assistance. Assistant United States Attorney Eileen Kuo took the lead in prosecution, earning praise from the U. S. Attorney for her efforts.
