Michael Wayne Bentley III, Meth Trafficking, Tennessee 2024

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. – A Tennessee man has been sentenced to over 23 years in prison for his role in a massive methamphetamine trafficking operation.

Michael Wayne Bentley, III, 28, of Gray, Tennessee, was sentenced to 284 months of imprisonment by the Honorable J. Ronnie Greer, United States District Judge, in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Tennessee at Greeneville.

Bentley will also serve five years of supervised release following his incarceration. His conviction stems from a three-day jury trial in December 2023, where he was found guilty of conspiracy to distribute 50 grams or more of methamphetamine, attempting to possess with the intent to distribute 50 grams or more of methamphetamine, and using a firearm during a drug trafficking offense.

The evidence presented at trial revealed that Bentley arranged for deliveries of methamphetamine to the Kingsport area via the U.S. Postal Service from a source of supply located in Mexico. Law enforcement intercepted two packages containing a combined total of over 1,733 grams of methamphetamine. In one instance, agents replaced the methamphetamine with items of a similar weight and delivered the package to Bentley’s grandparent’s residence, where he was subsequently arrested and found to be in possession of a firearm.

Bentley’s arrest was the result of a joint investigation by the United States Homeland Security Investigations, the United States Postal Inspection Service, and the Second Judicial Drug Task Force. The case is part of an Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces investigation, which uses a prosecutor-led, intelligence-driven approach to disrupt and dismantle high-level drug trafficking organizations.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Tennessee praised the collaborative effort that led to Bentley’s conviction, saying it demonstrates the commitment to combating the scourge of methamphetamine trafficking in the region.

U.S. Attorney Francis M. Hamilton III, Special Agent in Charge Rana M. Saoud of the United States Homeland Security Investigations, and Inspector in Charge Tommy D. Coke of the United States Postal Inspection Service made the announcement, commending the work of Assistant United States Attorneys Emily Swecker and B. Todd Martin, who represented the United States in the case.

The investigation was led by HSI Special Agent John Bulla, who said the case highlights the importance of interagency cooperation in taking down high-level drug traffickers.

The prosecution of Bentley is a significant step forward in the fight against methamphetamine trafficking in Tennessee and beyond. As the court’s sentence demonstrates, those who engage in this deadly business will face the full force of the law.
