Donald Blaine Ashby, Methamphetamine Trafficking, Tennessee 2020

Donald Blaine Ashby, 39, of Jackson, TN, is headed to federal prison for 180 months after being convicted of possessing 50 grams or more of actual methamphetamine with intent to distribute and carrying a firearm during a drug trafficking crime. U.S. Attorney D. Michael Dunavant confirmed the sentence today, slamming Ashby as a repeat offender who flooded communities with poison.

The trouble began July 26, 2018, when Paris, Tennessee, police pulled over a vehicle with Ashby in the backseat. Inside, cops found 51.6 grams of pure meth. State charges followed. Released on bail, Ashby didn’t stay free long. Less than two months later, on September 12, 2018, the Benton County Sheriff’s Department responded to a call about an unconscious man in a car near Highway 70 West in Camden. That man was Ashby — asleep behind the wheel, cash scattered across the floorboard.

When officers roused him, they searched the vehicle and hit the jackpot: 274.09 grams of actual methamphetamine and a loaded .25 caliber pistol within reach. For a man already convicted of selling meth and illegally possessing a weapon, the discovery was a federal death knell. Federal law bars felons like Ashby from owning guns or ammo — a rule he ignored while trafficking poison across West Tennessee.

On August 18, 2020, U.S. Chief District Court Judge S. Thomas Anderson handed down the 15-year sentence, followed by five years of supervised release. There is no parole in the federal system — meaning Ashby will serve every mandated month behind bars. Prosecutors made no plea deals, no allowances for relapse or hardship. This was a straight shot: 180 months for a man who kept breaking the law while high on his own supply.

U.S. Attorney D. Michael Dunavant didn’t mince words: ‘Ashby is a dangerous recidivist drug offender who was destroying the community by his sale of highly potent and poisonous drugs, and his prior felony convictions have finally caught up with him. Thanks to the great investigative work by our federal and local law enforcement partners, he has been held accountable and his removal from the community will make citizens safer.’

The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the Paris Police Department, the Benton County Sheriff’s Department, and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). Assistant U.S. Attorney Hillary L. Parham prosecuted. Ashby’s criminal run is over — at least for the next 15 years.
