BOSTON – A Mexican national has been indicted for unlawfully reentering the United States after a string of deportations. Jose Mendoza-Zarrate, 41, faces one count of unlawful reentry of a deported alien, a charge that could land him behind bars for up to two years.
Mendoza-Zarrate was nabbed on May 20, 2025, mere days after returning to the country. His initial appearance in federal court is scheduled for Springfield, Mass., where he will be judged on his past transgressions. According to charging documents, Mendoza-Zarrate has been deported four times before: on May 16, 2006; July 3, 2006; May 30, 2007; and Aug. 30, 2007.
Should he be found guilty, Mendoza-Zarrate could face a fine of up to $250,000, three years of supervised release, and the possibility of being deported once again after serving his sentence. Sentencing will be determined by a federal district court judge according to U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and relevant statutes.
United States Attorney Leah B. Foley and Patricia H. Hyde, Field Office Director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Enforcement and Removal Operations in Boston, announced the charges against Mendoza-Zarrate. Assistant U.S. Attorney Todd E. Newhouse of the Springfield Branch Office is handling the prosecution.
While the details in the charging documents are allegations, Mendoza-Zarrate is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
