Meriden’s Jean Carlos Mercado, 34, was today sentenced to 50 months behind bars, followed by three years of supervised release, for his role in a drug trafficking organization that used the U.S. Mail to transport kilograms of cocaine from Puerto Rico to Connecticut.
The U.S. Attorney for the District of Connecticut, Vanessa Roberts Avery, announced the sentence handed down by U.S. District Judge Michael P. Shea in Hartford. Mercado was apprehended after law enforcement identified suspicious parcels emanating from Puerto Rico. On October 26, 2020, investigators pinpointed him picking up one of these parcels at a Meriden address.
Investigative efforts led to the seizure of two kilograms of cocaine when Mercado collected another package on November 6, 2020. His vehicle was stopped and towed on that occasion, yielding four additional kilograms of cocaine. Mercado’s arrest came on July 21, 2021, following a federal criminal complaint.
Mercado confessed to conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute five kilograms or more of cocaine when he pleaded guilty on July 26, 2022. Today, after being released on bond, he was handed over to the U.S. Marshals Service to start his sentence.
This case was a collaborative effort between the Drug Enforcement Administration New Haven Task Force and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, with support from the Meriden Police Department. The DEA New Haven Task Force involves personnel from various federal agencies and local police departments.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Konstantin Lantsman prosecuted the case as part of the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) Program, which targets and dismantles drug traffickers, money launderers, and transnational criminal organizations.
