ORLANDO, FL – Federal Judge Roy B. Dalton, Jr., has meted out a six-year-and-six-month sentence to Merritt Island resident James Otis Liptak (36) for the receipt and possession of child pornography.
Liptak pleaded guilty on October 22, 2014, after authorities uncovered a trove of over 5,000 images and 113 movies of child exploitation stored on his home computers. The court also ordered him to forfeit the electronic devices involved in the crime.
The investigation began when Brevard County deputies and FBI agents linked an IP address associated with suspected child porn to Liptak’s residence in Merritt Island. A federal search warrant executed at the site yielded evidence of Liptak’s involvement, prompting his confession during questioning.
This case was a pivotal part of Project Safe Childhood, a DOJ initiative combatting child sexual exploitation since 2006. The FBI and Brevard County Sheriff’s Office Child Exploitation Task Force collaborated to bring Liptak to justice, while Assistant United States Attorney Bruce S. Ambrose prosecuted the case.
Project Safe Childhood mobilizes federal, state, and local agencies to locate, apprehend, and prosecute child predators and rescue victims. For more information on this initiative, visit www.justice.gov/psc.
