GRIMY TIMES EXCLUSIVE: Richard Dale Brooks, a former U.S. Navy veteran, has been sentenced to over seven years in federal prison for receiving child pornography over the internet.
In Jacksonville, Florida, Judge Marcia Morales Howard handed down a 7-year-and-11-month sentence on five counts of receiving child pornography and one count of possessing it.
Brooks, now 55 years old from Cocoa, was identified by law enforcement in May 2012 during an investigation into individuals sharing child porn via peer-to-peer file-sharing programs. A search warrant at his residence uncovered several computers with explicit material, including images of prepubescent minors and sadistic content.
Despite a 20-year military career and no prior criminal history, Brooks requested the lowest sentence under the law—60 months. However, the court ruled otherwise, reflecting the severity of his offense.
This case was part of Project Safe Childhood, a DOJ initiative combating child sexual exploitation. Investigated by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations and the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, it was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Kelly S. Karase.
