A brazen crime spree has come to an end for 33-year-old Mervyn Lucas, who was sentenced to 75 months in prison for his role in a string of illicit activities that include possession of a stolen vehicle, a firearm, and over 10 pounds of marijuana.
According to court documents, the Norfolk Southern Railyard reported a brand new, $80,000 Ford F-150 Raptor stolen from their premises. Law enforcement tracked the vehicle to Lucas’s residence, where they found a fraudulent temporary license plate and a second fraudulent plate inside an envelope addressed to Lucas.
Furthermore, authorities discovered over 10 pounds of vacuum-sealed marijuana in Lucas’s residence, which he intended to distribute. A loaded Romarm/Cugir Model Micro Draco AK-47-style firearm was also found, with over 40 rounds of ammunition.
Lucas, who previously pleaded guilty to the charges, will serve 75 months in prison followed by 3 years of supervised release, as per the sentencing order by U.S. District Judge Eldon E. Fallon. He will also pay a $300 mandatory special assessment fee.
The investigation, which was part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), involved Homeland Security Investigations and the Louisiana State Police. Assistant United States Attorney David Berman of the Violent Crime Unit is prosecuting the case.
The Norfolk Southern Railyard theft is just one of the many crimes that have plagued the city of New Orleans. The PSN program aims to bring together all levels of law enforcement and the communities they serve to reduce violent crime and gun violence, and make neighborhoods safer for everyone.
Mervyn Lucas, 33, was sentenced on February 6, 2025, for possession with intent to distribute marijuana, in violation of 21 U.S.C. §§ 841(a)(1) and 841(b)(1)(D); possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime, in violation of 18 U.S.C. § 924(c)(1)(A)(i); and possession of a car stolen from the Norfolk Southern Railyard, in violation of 18 U.S.C. § 659.
